New Nanoscale Coating Won't Get Wet

Jan. 16, 2013 — A nanoscale coating that's at least 95 percent air repels the broadest range of liquids of any material in its class, causing them to bounce off the treated surface, according to the University of Michigan engineering researchers who developed it.

In addition to super stain-resistant clothes, the coating could lead to breathable garments to protect soldiers and scientists from chemicals, and advanced waterproof paints that dramatically reduce drag on ships.

This is another pretty amazing find. Although not quite HAZ-MAT level in that it can't repel all hazardous liquids, it certainly can do a good job at repelling most every-day chemicals and liquids that we deal with. As stated in the article, it repels Most Non-Newtonian liquids such as shampoos, custards, blood, printer ink and the like.

For every-day purposes if we can perfect this kind of coating we will actually be able to reduce the risk of house-hold stains(even dangerous ones) to a minimal level. Still far from perfect, the applications aren't fully tested yet but it shows promising and that they are heading in the right direction for more finds in repelling hazardous liquids.

Just think, we may have a shirt that could protect you from breathing in sprayed chemicals by pulling it up over your mouth. Since we do that anyway, we may as well have a bit better protection while we make ourselves look ridiculous.
