What is the meaning of life? Will we ever know the true meaning of life? Is there a cosmic meaning to life? Or is it all an accumulation of our choices? Could the meaning of life be whatever we want it to be? Ok, these are all pretty vague and unanswerable questions. We are speaking in a cosmic set in stone sense, and sometimes that's not the best way to go. Why? Because we can't prove these ideas to be true or false.
It's much like asking whether God exists or not. It's an idea that cannot be answered through repeating results and testing. Simply put: It's just an idea. Yet still, I can't help but see things differently than most on how life should be. I rather hate human culture in this era. It's very self absorbed and gluttonous, all the while neglecting it's own problems and refusing to accept it's addictions.
What will it take for us to realize our folly and move past this infantile phase of self-destruction? A trip away from home usually does the trick. I am, of course, speaking of space travel! Many of you have taken a vacation away from your home at some point in your life. Many of you have even experienced a greater appreciation for the things you have as a result. Removing ourselves from our complacency is exactly what it takes to jar us awake from our slumber.
It seems like a pretty simple concept, but few truly apply this to the sense of moving the human race forward. Climate change is a very real danger, whether man causes it or not. There will come a time when our species will need to take to the stars in order to survive. The sooner we get out into the blackened sea the sooner we will learn to adapt. Evolution is something we understand, and it's something we will eventually have to take into our own hands.
But instead of fleeing the earth from catastrophe, only to look back and miss what we had, perhaps we should travel to the stars so we can return to the appreciate it while it's there. It's not different than taking the time to travel when you're young, so the life you establish back home is appreciated all the more. I speak from experience, in that it really sucks to be unable to seek that opportunity to travel.
I am locked by debt in a life of working too much and spending precious time on other people's dreams instead of chasing my own. Such is the life I had set myself up for, before I had awoken and realized what life really meant to me. While it's a shame that I'll be 27 this year and still just starting to love life, I know it's never too late to work towards that goal of traveling.
It's not too late for the human race to begin it's journey on taking to the stars! We should seek to establish ourselves in the cold of space as soon as possible, so that we might be better prepared when the time comes to evacuate the planet earth. There is no one else that can do this for us. We must take it upon ourselves to pool our minds and resources into something that will one day save countless numbers of people.
I also promise to not take my life for granted anymore either. Now, I'm working towards getting out into the world. So I can finally call the place I rest my head Home.
